JASPER COUNTY GENEALOGY

Early photo of Montrose, MSJasper County is one of the ten counties in Mississippi that have two courthouses. The Courthouse in Bay Springs has records available from 1906. The Chancery Clerks office has newspapers, divorces, deeds, estates, wills, and deeds of trust. Circuit Clerk’s office has marriage records dating from 1906.
The Courthouse in Paulding houses land records (deeds, estates, wills, deeds of trust, oil & gas records and marriage and divorces from 1932.
There are books and records in the public library in Bay Springs. A cemetary book for Jasper County exists, but is no longer in print. There are copies available in the Bay Springs and Heidelberg Libraries. There are also many great old photographs in the Old Post Office Building next to the courtyard in downtown Bay Springs. The building is owned and maintained by Magnolia State Bank. The photo of Montrose above is located there.

An excellent resource for those researching Jasper County Genealogy is provided by Keith Eddins Wilkerson. He has gathered histories of many events, places, and people in Jasper County.
Keith maintained a website with Jasper County information available to all. As his internet provider is no longer available, Keith has transferred his information into a book titled, Reflections of Local History – Jasper County, Mississippi”, which can be purchased on Amazon as hardback.   It is also available in the Kindle digital format, but the author recommends the printed version due to the abundance of small print newspaper photographs.  The book covers 1830 until present and includes most of the larger Jasper communities.

Keith Wilkerson has written a  well-received adventure/love story novel, set in the mid-50’s in Jasper County, In addition to his Jasper History book. Readers will recognize many familiar local landmarks in the story. This book, titled “The Bridge To Church Road is also available at Amazon.com.
